Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, All Saints Lutheran Church, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints comprise a “Circle of Welcome,” joining together with Lutheran Services Refugee and Immigrant Services to assist in the relocation of three Afghan men.
Two of the three men have arrived. They are Anbyia, age 25, and Noor Ali, age 34. Both are married; their families remain in Afghanistan. They do not speak English, but hope to learn soon. They hope also soon to become employed as both are anxious to send back funds to their families. They are staying in an Airbnb in N. Charleston for about a month before moving into an apartment. The Airbnb has been stocked with food and other needed items. Anbyia arrived from Minneapolis Sunday morning wearing shoes that were very much ill-fitting. He was taken yesterday to DSW where he got new shoes and a belt. Both Anbyia and Noor Ali have pleasant dispositions and demeanors. They are very grateful and have mastered “thank you”. We are looking forward to conversations with them after they have learned English. Anbyia speaks Pashto; a translation app, English to Pashto has been helpful.
Most furnishings for the apartment have been collected. Moving teams with trucks, vans and manpower on moving day will be needed.
