Rev. Dr. Peter Bynum

Before moving to Mount Pleasant, Peter served as the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Concord, NC, where he was head of staff from 2014-2018. He previously served as the Senior Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Rocky Mount, NC. Upon graduation from Davidson College in 1991, Peter worked on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. for several years. Noticing that many of the most exciting jobs in public policy were held by attorneys, he enrolled in the University of Virginia School of Law and earned his J.D. in 1996.

He then spent the next ten years practicing commercial real estate law — first for a large firm in Charlotte and later for a smaller partnership in Wilmington, NC. While he loved working with his clients and law partners, it was during this period that Peter first began to sense a different call upon his time and talents. The next few years, which were marked by increased commitment to lay ministry as a deacon in his church, were some of the most formative of his life. Through prayer, the support of his wife Stephanie, and the steady guidance of family and trusted friends, Peter became convinced that God was calling him into service as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church.

Following that call, Peter and his family moved to Richmond, where he earned his Master of Divinity degree from Union Presbyterian Seminary. He later received his Doctorate in Ministry from Columbia Theological Seminary (2017). Peter is passionate about preaching and teaching and has guided his previous congregation through the development of its Strategic Vision and Mission. Peter’s wife Stephanie is a UNC Tar Heel with a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University. Peter and Stephanie have two beautiful daughters, Molly (16) and Kate (12).
