SUMMARY:Third Act
DESCRIPTION:The Unseen Threat: German U-Boats in Charleston Waters: We received many glowing compliments about Shelby’s presentation last May on various lighthouses in our area. On April 27th\, Shelby will return to tell us about German U-Boats in our Charleston Waters. She has done an exhaustive research into the German U-boat archives including the cruise logs available for each mission. A visitor to Fort Moultrie Visitor Center today will find displays that says both U-751 and U-455 paid separate visits to Charleston Harbor in 1942\, each laying several mines in our waters. Is that accurate? Were there more incursions? What else is there to the story? Come hear what Shelby can tell us about this unseen threat. \nJoin us for a covered dish luncheon at noon\, bring a covered dish of your choice and chicken tenders will be provided. Please let us know you’re coming by RSVPing here or contact Susan Mellichamp at susanmell@att.net or (843) 697-2111.

SUMMARY:Connect 3 and Youngish Adults Joint Class: Dr. Kathryn B. McGrew
DESCRIPTION:Connect 3 and Youngish Adults are jointly hosting a special Sunday morning event Nov. 10 and you are invited! \nKathryn B. McGrew\, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita in the department of Sociology and Gerontology at Scripps Gerontology Center\, Miami University\, Ohio. Kathy has researched\, taught\, and lectured widely about aging; in particular\, the conversations between parents and their children as parents enter the 3rd and especially 4th stage of life when independent living is not feasible. This is a topic that crosses over thresholds and affects us all in our roles as adult children and as parents\, if not now then in the future. As Christians\, we believe God is concerned with the whole of our lives — which includes the difficulties we face and the conversations we have with one another. Living faithfully as Christians invites us to approach uncertain and hard things with the assurance that God is with us and to learn from others\, especially those with knowledge to share. \nJoin us in Grace Hall 221/223/225 at 9:45 Nov. 10.

SUMMARY:Dip into the Gospels: a Four-Fold Story (Mark\, Matthew\, Luke\, and John)
DESCRIPTION:When considering the four gospels – Mark\, Matthew\, Luke\, and John– the Bible reader stands as if she is a MPPD investigating officer who has arrived on the scene of an incident at the intersection of Johnnie Dodds and Houston Northcutt. She finds four bystanders who witnessed what happened and are eager to give their statements. As she listens to each individual\, the investigator discovers that the four accounts are not the same – a new detail here\, a different emphasis there. Yet\, her experience helps her weave a coherent story that tells a fuller truth than that of a single witness. \nOn Wednesdays from Oct. 2-23\, we’ll be that investigator as we dip into the gospel accounts of Mark\, Matthew\, Luke\, and John. As we pay attention to each witness\, we can expect to find a fuller and more coherent story of the life\, work\, and words of Jesus of Nazareth. Instead of one witness\, God uses four different voices to speak in their day… and in ours. \nExploring one gospel per week\, each session will take place after dinner on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:15 pm – Oct. 2\, 9\, 16\, 23 in Grace Hall 123/125. Dinner for adults will begin at 5:45. Registration is requested here for dinner so we can plan for plenty of food! No registration is required for the program. Come as you are!
